Is a treadmill hard on your knees?

I've used the elliptical for years, but lately I've wanted to try out the treadmill. I get pains in my knees when I do outdoor running. Does treadmill running cause as much shock to your knees as outdoor running?

  1. i feel less impact running outside on soft surfaces such as canals or grassy areas

  2. No, treadmills are soft.  But doing the same motion over and over again at the same speed is to be avoided.

if outdoor running hurts you, you might want to  look at the surface you are running on.  Concrete hurts everyone, asphalt is better, dirt trails and grass are preferable.  lifting weights makes the biggest long term difference for runners who have knee pain.  I know track long and triple jumpers who can jump down a flight of stairs without pain because they are so strong.  But even they avoid training on hard surfaces.

Try running backwards and sideways to vary the stress on your knees when you run.  It really is all about strength, so however you can work your quad muscles hard it will help.  Biking and lifting weights comes to mind.  I like to walk with weights in my backpack sometimes and i think it helps.  Good luck! I hope your knees feel better

p.s.  remember RICE Rest Ice Compression and Elevation.

  3. yes, any type of running puts some pressure on your knees.  i know many women getting knee injuries from excess running.  but if you don't overdo it, then you should be fine. :) good luck!

  4. Yes it does.  Run on soft surfaces as much as possible.  Just try to avoid running on treadmills.

  5. outdoor running is the best. concrete and grass are better for your muscle form than treadmill.
