  1. Actually, it's neither.

    720p = 1280x720, non interlaced

    1080i = 1920x1080, interlaced

    Any time an HD set receives a signal that's not its native resolution, it converts it to whatever the native resolution is.  Most people would call that set a 720p set, but realize, that there will be up or down conversion done on any signal passed to that TV, since nothing is broadcast in 768i or 768p.

  2. 720p is it's native resolution. It can probably ACCEPT a 1080i signal, but it will downscale it to 720p. Check your manual if you still have it to see what different resolution signals it can accept.
