I am going to hawaii for 7 days for spring break and my birthday. I plan to take surfing lessons while I am there because I really really want to learn, but my home is like 4 hours from the beach so yeah my time is pretty much limited. Is a week of learning to surf enough time to get the basics down? I know I won't be good or anything within that time...but I want to give it a shot. (When I go off to college in august I will be closer to the coast)

  1. One week!  Your in for a disapointment, Unless you find a small and slow break. You may be able to paddle out and catch a wave, but good luck standing up and riding it.

  2. Ummm....Yes. I learned how to ride in 4 days but you are going to be sore. Once you get to Hawaii, the next day go out to the beach for at least 3 hours for first, getting used to the water, second, getting into a GOOD surf school and third, get on your feet on white water and get used to popping up and paddling. After that first day surfing go to the beach about 1-2  hours a day with the same instructor and same surf school. If you follow this you are going to be sore but going to be hooked for life, and O.K at surfing.

  3. There really is no way of measuring this. i live in hawaii and surf pretty much everyday and i have seen some VERY funny things when people are learning how to surf. if you skate or snowboard, you will most likely pick it up very quickly. but if you "keep your head in the game," haha, or stay focused, you will most likely have it down within a week.

  4. dont try surfing. it sucks

  5. you'll probably be able to stand for a short amount of time on the board and ride in straight. but surfing really is harder than it looks .. there's a lot more to it once you're actually out there trying to catch a wave. you probably will still not be any good at the end of a week. i was just in australia for 4 months and in that time, a lot of people took up surfing and even some of them didn't get to riding an actual wave off to the side and cutting in.

it's especially harder to learn to surf because unlike other sports, the swell has to be good for a beginner, otherwise you're just asking for trouble.

good luck though if you do decide to give it a go!

  6. Thats awesome that your going surfing me to for my birthday!

but you might want to look at what type of board suits your body type and height. Also work on you endurance and cardio workouts are great! also the stability ball works on blanace, or and Indo board is great too for pre-surf realted workouts.

  7. If by basics you mean paddling and maybe being able to catch white water and stand up then the answer is yes.  Surfing has got to be one of the hardest things in the world to get good at.  But if you're taking lessons and have a solid week to spend you will definitely be on the road and having fun.
