Is a whole step too little of a key change to make a difference?

i'm playing a song and i don't know if i should change the key from D to C or D to G

i'm gonna play it in G or C then D

Hm, I would like to listen to the song.  I think that you should transpose it to several different keys and record it in each key.

Then listen to the recording and pick the one that sounds best.

I really don't know but I think it is good the way it is. I don;t know alot about music except I play the cello.

When you change keys in a piece of music, it is always better to ascend rather than descend.  So, whether it is one step (D up to E) or four steps (G up to C) always ascend!

Are you going to be singing this song?  If you are singing the song while playing, pick the key that bests works with your voice or the voice that you are accompanying!

It's a perfect way to modulate into a different key signature. An easy method is to play the dominant seventh chord of the new key and then go into the new key.

For example, if you wish  to change from C to D, simply play an A7 before going into D.
