  1. Most definitely a fungus.  It is NOT an animal or plant.  It is in the kingdom of fungi.

    Fungi used to be classied as plants (that's the way it was when I took Highschool biology in the 1970s).

    Later on, scientists decided that fungi are a separate "kingdom" from plants. I'm not sure exactly when that happened.

    But that doesn't mean they are animals.

    For the purposes of vegetarian philosophy, fungi are considered the same as plants because they live in more or less the same way (they don't move or have organs like animals, they get their nutrients from the soil, etc.).

    Bacteria also have their own kingdom, they are technically not animals.
