Question:

Is accidental ingestion of fermented juice bad for baby?

My 9-month-old daughter found a sippy cup today that she had lost yesterday evening. Apparently that was long enough for the juice to warm up and ferment, because when I took it away from her and opened it up, it had a strong smell like vinegar. I dilute the juice, so it's mostly water (which is why I wasn't in a hurry to get the cup away from her), but I'm wondering if it's possible for her to get stomach issues or even if it's as bad as if she drank alcohol. I'm a bit worried, as she got quite a few sips down before I got to her. If anyone knows anything about this, I welcome input. Thanks!

  1. I have had this happen with my daughter. I am sure you daughter will be fine too. She might get a tummy ache. But I think she will be fine. No worries.

  2. give her pedyisure that should help prevent stomach cramps, and no don't worry about it to much. it hasn't fermented long enough to be any danger.

  3. No, my daughter has done that before.   She's always losing sippy cups and a couple times has had some fermented juice without me realizing it until it's too late. I think your daughter will be fine, especially since she only had a few sips.  It didn't have very long to ferment so it's definately not like serving up wine in her sippy.  I wouldn't worry unless she's seeming ill.  My guess would be no though.

  4. she will be fine. Even if she drank alcohol that little would not have mush of an effect on her. I am a little surprised she drank it if it did not taste good.

  5. If she's walking straight then it had not turned to alcohol!  Just kidding, she will be fine. My kids in their time injested all kinds of things from a bowl of cigarette butts to a glass of water full of ticks removed from our dogs!! Arrghh

  6. to be honest, i am fairly certain that your child will not have any issues from this event, and if she does, just a mild stomach ache. of course- fermented juice is wine/alcohol so if it was a higher amount of "wine" ingested, then the child could be drunk or have a liver problem( since it's still in the developmental stages) but she'll be fine... besides, back in medevial times they gave beer to the children to drink to toughen thier liver so that if they drink bad water(or any anything else) , they wouldn't die from it.

  7. If it smelled like vinegar, she probably lost this one long before yesterday. Juice doesn't ferment over night. If it was from months ago, it could have fermented and would make her sick.

  8. no she will be fine, it was from yesterday
