Is advance maths (trigonometry, Calculus and analytical geometry 1,2) essential to complete an IT degree? Isn't basic methametics (Algebra) enough? why is so?

I'm currently enrolling in a IT degree and i'm doing quite good on my subjects, specially on my computer subjects (i.e Java, C++). however i suck on maths. so tell me, is it really necessary for me to learn advance maths?

  1. Two of my children have an IT degree (AAS) and they were required to take math on up to pre-calculus.  Some computer classes require math figures for coding.  My daughter took a class in Game Design and had to use alot of mathmatical figures/equations to get into the mind of the games.

  2. Yes and no. You said an IT degree. If you mean IT, that is NOT programming, it's working with systems. IT degrees definitely require some math, but if you are talking about Computer Science (Comp Sci), that IS programming and YES it does require higher level math. All Comp Sci programs will require Advanced Algebra, usually Statistics and Probability, and at least 1, usually 2, semesters of Calculus. Programming requires logical thinking and the ability to solve mathematical problems, that is why higher level math is required. Don't worry, math is not as hard as you think. If you take your time and get tutoring at the school, you should be fine. FYI: All the high-paying programming jobs DO require extensive analytical skills including lot's of math.

Also, the person above me is talking about an Associates Degree (AS), which is a 2 year degree, not a 4 year BS in Comp Sci. You will definitely need to take Calculus in a 4 year program.
