  1. Aikido is a pretty hard one to get good at quickly. But if you're already near brown in Aikido, maybe you should take up a striking art, too...at least so you'll be able to defend against punches and kicks

  2. Aikido can help you out and would be a wonderful tool... as long as you practice the techniques on people who are coming at you full force, resisting or attempting to resist, and wildly (not with straight organized strikes). This is because if you happen to get into an altercation at school the person you're up against might not be trained and could throw unorthodox attacks your way. The problem here is that in the dojo a lot of training is with people who are of similar background in technique and leave you untrained for the variables of real life situations.

So the thing you really need to do is take a look at your training, and see if it's preparing you for these types of encounters. If not, you could adjust your training accordingly, or attempt to study a different more varied system such as an MMA gym or a Kempo or Karate place, a Boxing gym etc.

Aikido if trained properly should be all you need to survive, so don't doubt the system or yourself. Just make sure that you train for every scenario you can think of. You don't have to train a thousand moves, but just a few that you can use for a thousand attacks.

Good Luck, and stay out of trouble. The more people growing up and steering clear of the violence-happy-caveman-society the better.

  3. Aikido is a hard art to effectively use "ALONE" in a fight.  The principals that you will learn are applicable, but actual application of the art to an actual fight takes time to master.

It's a great art for allowing the other person to appear violent, and yourself to appear defensive only. But that's means that you're on point and can effectively translate the art to self defense. Not so easily done.

  4. of course.  if you apply the proper technique for those circumstances a skilled fighter should never lose to an unskilled fighter.  but then again it can also depend on the individual and how they react to real world situations.  I've also seen 2nd Dan's get KO'd by unskilled fighters in the street because they went to belt factories and didn't really learn anything.

  5. dude aikidos a start. i think you should definetely look into other stuff though. look up sifu rudy on you tube. he changed my life. please look it up.

  6. have you ever seen anyone uses aikido to throw ppl around in real fight or any mixed MA tournament?except for demos or movies right?and those ppl who are thrown just go with the flow without retaliation or resistant at all..most fight you see is punches, kicks, grapple, wrestle etc..only can see joint locks by police officers with back up or bouncers in control envinronment.I bet you will never saw real fight like what you see in seagal movies. So the conclusion is..be realistic when comes to defending or fighting. Other MAs focus on grappling, punching, kicking or wrestling are more close to the real things you see in real fight. In a fight when both are preparing for strategy to win...dont even think of seagal moves gonna work on the opponent. Movies is just acting. In UFC i dont see anyone using aikido to defend against attacker or to win a fight...so to me aikido is not really effective if you re facing a hooligan who are experience in fights. It gives knowlegde about joint locks and throws....thats it.Those who says aikido works in real fight are just using theory or dojo training but not in real fight or competitive fighting match..you can use it on drunkard person who are slow and weak but on a real hardcore fighter or someone with experience,i dont think so...so dont wait for your opponent to attack you and thinking that you can throw or break the guys bones like seagal does...hahahhaha..it just wont happen

  7. id continue aikido is a great art but u casnt defend ur self for a long time typicaly like a first dan but if u dont maeditate every day it can easily be third because that is what they are missing from their art it also depends on ur personal speed and ki development ive done aiakido and it is my favorite art and i no thatr the moves get easier to learn but the high rank before practicality is to be expected although i no akido brown belts who defended themselves u can see how odd the art is and yo watch this it is madd sick

ueshiba by the way is the founder of aikido

  8. Keep training in Aikido. If you desire to learn something else too, then do that. But you shouldn't just throw away aikido.

Don't go into high school expecting to fight. Many never get into a fight in high school. But if you do you will be prepared defend yourself or your loved ones.

You don't have to strike someone to so-call win a fight. The best way to win is to make your enemy your friend. I know this is not always possible.  Mostly because of our ego.

Joint locks an joint manipulations, and throws are very effective. As a warning to let them know you aren't interested in fighting.

  9. i think aikido is a very good ma to defend yourself at school.striking can and will get you into trouble at school, aikido techniques will help you to defend yourself and keep within the rules.it still wouldn't hurt to do another ma as well but if your happy with aikido stick with it and crosstrain in a striking art such as karate, muay thai or boxing.i would suggest freestyle karate.

  10. no. maybe if you keep your wits about you and they feed you attacks.

i usually dont like badmouthing things. but aikido isn't exactly known for its combat effectiveness.

not that its a bad art. but it just takes so long to get good enough at it to use.

you really need some striking to add to your grappling base. aikido sure looks pretty, in my opinion its one of the most beautiful to watch. but i honestly wonder how it would work against a real attack.

i dont know kind of like one of those "haha...let ME throw a punch or two at you and see if you can throw me" ...i think some could, i think most couldnt.

  11. Well in Tae Kwon Do which I take, you aren't suppose to use it unless you absolutely have too.

  12. If your going for Brown belt then I won't preach to teach to the converted, but personally I think Aikido is an excellent art and actually I could'nt decide for 4 months whether to join Jiu-jitsu or Aikido but I chose Jiu-jitsu as at the time with being young I thought it better but now at 45yrs old I'd still love to join an Aikido club if I could find one that doesn't do block booking or contracts and allows you to pay as you attend.

Stick with it and I know you will realise you have done the right thing in years to come.

    Just my humble opinion.

    Best wishes :)***
