It certainly can be a good employer, as many employees have spent their work lifetimes with them.  It is impossible to say what chances there are for the future as these will vary considerably.

This begins with  the qualifications of the individual and the position being sought. After employment begins much will depend on how well the employee does in the job, and how quickly he/she earns advancement.

Look at additional education/training on the job, because many positions will be changing as technology advances, so an eager learner may get an opportunity that others may not be offered, or even see.
