  1. I know that the Army Air Corps stopped painting planes camo in WWII to reduce wieght.  It saved about 40 lbs. of an average fighter.

  2. Yup that's correct........Like 600 Pounds

Which is why American just polishes their planes and it cuts back on weight saving them gas which now in days saves money.

  3. yes.really heavy

  4. I remember reading that the paint on a C-5 Galaxy weighs more than a fully loaded C172, almost 2500lbs!

  5. Actually, here's a practical answer to your question: What does a gallon of paint weigh? Go to your local hardware store and pick one up. Feel how much just that paint can weighs full.

Now, imagine that times about 450 for a narrow-body aircraft and about 600 for a wide-body. The paint has to be delivered on pallets, so, yes, it is that heavy.

  6. Yep!

    Don't believe me?

Pick up a 5 gallon bucket of paint sometime. Multiply that by how many it would take to primer and paint a Jumbo Jet.

Also, the paint job may look nice and smooth and slick, but up close, it's not as smooth as a polished aluminum skin (aerodynamics).

  7. C-5 paint weights Over one thousand pounds, 747 even more
