I was playing Scattergories and for the category "Things That Are Round" someone put an arc. Are they right?

  1. You have gotten two answers and they disagree.  The context is important here.  If you are arguing that an arc was not the best example to demonstrate a point, I would agree.  A circle would have been more accurate.  An arc would be more precisely considered "curved."  I can understand what the person was thinking, though.  He/she was thinking of something more round than it is straight or square, as in the term "rounded."

Different perceptions of things are why games like Scattergories are supposed to be fun, but sometimes they can become bones of contention.  If this is a friend or loved one, the bottom line is that this is not worth pursuing at the risk of straining that relationship.  If you have a bet going, I would say it can't be absolutely resolved.  You should both abandon it and go take a shower together -- or whatever.

  2. An arc is a curved line. It is a segment of the circumference of a circle.  And as a round object and a circle are essentially commensurate, then an arc is not a round object.

  3. Yes, they are.
