Is an archaeologist sort of considered a scientist?

Someone hit a nerve. The first response is right. Archaeologists and Anthropologists are in the social sciences, not the hard empirical sciences. Thus, they are grouped with pscyhologists, sociologists, and political scientists. These could be considered soft sciences. However, the term scientist is generally reserved for someone who studies the natural sciences, deals with empircal data and hypothesis. Soft sciences are too prone to romanticism and human subjective interpretation.
