Question:

Is an electronic self-cleaning litterbox worth the money?

I've looked at LitterMaid and ScoopFree electronic litterboxes. Is one better than the other? Is an electronic litterbox as convenient as they promise? Is it worth the $100 investment? Having gone through quite a few boxes I'm tired of wasting money--I have two cats and one is bigger than normal boxes allow for comfort-wise.

  1. We bought one several years ago, at a garage sale, which hadn't been used and was still sealed in its original box. It broke after a few days of use.

They're not worth the money. I think it's rather lazy not to manually clean your cat's litter box anyways. It doesn't take that much effort or time and doesn't require money, other than the expenses of litter.

How have you "gone through boxes"? Have you purchased the self-cleaning ones? Or are you speaking of typical littler boxes? Plastic litter boxes can last for years and years, as long as you scoop and change the litter often, as well as cleaning the box itself on occasions.

  2. I wouldn't bother with it. There's no guarantee your cat will even use it. I know with how picky my two boys are, I wouldn't risk it :)

  3. No, I've seen them on tv before, but it doesn't seem worth it. Sure, it's nice and stored in a neat little box and all, but you'll still have to get rid of the mess by hand. Cats are rather picky, so if by chance they don't use it, then it was a total waste of money. Stick with the manual litterboxes, it'll save you a ton in the long run.

  4. I have 3 cats and one cat is quite large (Maine Coon breed). For years he had to live with "commercial" litter boxes and when I moved south I was unpacking one day and he climbed into a storage tote full of shredded newspaper and proceeded to do his business. Fortunately the items had already been removed so I wasnt too upset but it clued me in to what he'd been looking for all these years. Next day, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a LARGE under-the-bed storage tote and brought it home, filled it with his favorite litter and took the old one out of the bathroom closet. PRESTO!!! He no longer perched on the edge of the box to do his business, no longer scratched all the litter out of the box trying to find room, etc.....you get the idea. Now we have 2 of the same kind of boxes in 2 different rooms and all 3 of them are happy as peas in a pod.   :)   Hope this suggestion helps.    PS I bought one of the self cleaning ones once. All 3 cats were terrified of it and wouldnt use it. Cleaning it yourself is really the best option that way you know right away if something isn't right in your cats diet.

  5. I'd buy it. But, I don't know if it's worth the money.
