  1. A cue will be a great gift but Eliminator isn't the best brand around. Call a local pool hall and ask them if they carry McDermott Cues. They probably do and will be willing to exchange it in case it isn't the right weight or shaft size.

  2. It's decent, I'd have no problem buying one for myself if I was only intending on using it as a breaker but that's about it.  But I will caution you, buying someone a poolstick isn't always the best idea, picking one out is very subjective based on the individual.  Every stick is different even when they're from the same company, different weights, different shaft thicknesses, some will hit harder, others softer.  Before you buy, make sure it can be returned in case it doesn't suit his preferences.  Even if it's the same weight and shaft size as one he uses now, it may not be best, he may want something heavier or lighter as a second stick.  He may want a harder hit, or a softer hit.  You may want to consider dropping a hint to him about what you're thinking before you actually make the purchase.  He may want to give you some guidance.  They're are a lot of good and/or decent cues out there.  What plays well for one person may not for another, it is VERY subjective.  I know people who have $100 cues, and $1000 cues, and which one they prefer for a given game or shot varies.  Once you break the $100 mark, it becomes more about individual taste, how decorative and how it plays, than it is about how well it will hold up.  I've got an old Schmelke, that when I pull it out plays as well as when I bought it 20 years ago, and I think I paid about $70 back then, I also have a Joss, that I paid about $400 for a dozen years ago, which still plays like it did the day I bought it (well actually it plays like the day I first replaced the tip with a moori medium, since that's what I've been using for years).  And yes the tip makes a very big difference in how a cue plays, someone who likes a soft tip probably won't like the way a cue feels at first if it comes with a very hard one, and vice versa.  So if you give him the stick, consider giving him a gift certificate to go with it, one that will cover a tip change.

  3. Its OK but not the greatest. If he is a recreational player and doesnt have any cue at all it should be good for him. If he takes the game very seriously it may not be the best choice, but then again if it is a gift from you, I'm sure he would be happy with it anyway. If the cue is straight and the tip remains well maintained it will be just fine.

  4. It really does depend on what kind of player he is.  If he is a serious player then no its not going to be something he is going to want to use.  Unless he is going to just put if someplace for show.  Eliminator is defenatly not a quality brand of pool cues.   If he is into pool, maybe look into a NFL logo pool case or balls if he has a table, or maybe an ultimate tip tool or cool chalk holder.  Good luck, and keep rackn em up!
