Question:

Is an inline fuse necessary for a car amp?

I have a 1000 watt amplifier and the amp wire was routed in a bad location and the inline fuse touched the manifold and melted. I'm wondering whether it would be okay to run it for a couple of days without an inline fuse or if it is absolutely necessary.

  1. An electrical circuit can run without a fuse forever PROVIDING there is never a fault with it....but if you ever get a fault then you'll wish you had a fuse.

A short of negligible impedance/resistance depending on the circuit, such as can be generated by a 12v battery can run to 2000amps.

If you think your amp can stand that much current then go knock yourself out.....personally, I doubt it.

  2. Check these sites out...it is a good reference.

If your headlight dims with the bass notes, the “BIG 3” might work.  If not an H.O. alternator will be needed, or else be prepared to pour a lot of $$$ for batteries.

This site explains the "BIG 3" upgrades.

  3. it is an added safety feature. multiple circuits inside the amp can get damaged before the amp fuse blows whereas an inline fuse will keep this from happening.

  4. Run the inline fuse, it provides constant current to the amp, or else the electrical in your car will bite the dust.  Relocate the inline fuse closer to the firewall, or in the car itself.

  5. You could risk a car fire if you bypass the fuse. Don't take the chance ! A good  car battery can deliver over 500 amps to a dead short. That's 500 X 12 = 6000 watts, or the same power needed to light 100 sixty watt light bulbs. Believe me, your car could  be TOAST !

  6. yes

  7. CRAZY ---DIFF. you need this i have seen cars catch FIRE b/c of this Keep it close to your Battery and keep it dry!!!! 1000Watts or more 80 to 100 amp fuse would be good you can get the 80 amp at AutoZone or elsewhere, please have one and make sure your cables are not going to touch any metal don't be affard to use elc. tape it will help with big wires.

    Good luck!!!! Jon street

  8. Electrically speaking it would work without a fuse but i would not recommend it as the fuse provides the protection for the amp if a short circuit or overloading problem occured within the amp. I know this is unlikely but if it did happen the amp would overheat with obvious consequences and i doubt the car electrics would enjoy it 2 much either!
