I recently had oral surgery. I was surprised that the oral surgeon was able to give me an IV sedation. Is oral surgery a special of dentistry or of medicine? Is he a DDM or MD?

  1. MD

  2. All oral surgeons are DDS/DMD, and all have completed an additional residency in oral surgery.  Some complete a 4-year residency, while other schools have 6-year residency programs, which include 2 years of medical school to obtain the MD degree.  A certified oral surgeon without the MD degree is no less of an oral surgeon when it comes to capabilities and scope of practice.

  3. He's a DDS, with additional special training.
