  1. Anointing is practiced in occult traditions as well as religious ones. The usual procedure is to use olive oil, but it must be prepared a special way. It must be "charged" with spiritual energy. usually by raising spiritual energy within and channeling it through the hands into a small quantity of the oil. The oil can then be used for purification and removal of negativity. Whether the practice is symbolic or paranormal, the idea is to purify and cleanse so that an intention can be realized, spiritual or otherwise.

From a non-paranormal point of view, this sort of symbolism can have positive results. Believing and acting as though you are purified can be beneficial. For example, when people are feeling good it reflects in their body language. They stand straighter and have a look of satisfaction and confidence about them. If someone is feeling down, standing straighter and making a conscious effort to look satisfied and confident will improve how they feel.

  2. Historically, an annointing was simply designating someone as something (like "king"), by pooring something on their head (like olive oil or something that smelled or looked even better).

  3. Yes, that's a term borrowed from religious ceremonies.
