Question:

Is an "estimated city tax" legal? My city wants me to file an "estimated" tax on my income for next year.

And they are telling me I owe penalties for not paying last year, because I didn't pay the "estimated" tax in installments. I paid the whole thing in April. How could I now have a penalty? I don't understand how I could have a penalty for an unadvertised tax law such as this. They say it is a city ordnance. Any ideas?

Thanks!

  1. The tax law is probably written to require quarterly payments if the tax isn't withheld by an employer.

  2. Are you self employed?  If so, it makes total sense.  They want you to pay as the year goes along like all of the people that have their taxes taken out by their employer each paycheck

  3. Ohio?

Ohio has some bizarre city income tax rules.
