  1. It can help because the degree focuses on cultural studies, which will make you better at working with people from different backgrounds (socio-economic, ethnic, etc).

And would probably due some good to take some sociology classes, which would help you more with people in your own country.

However, anthropology is about preserving or documenting other cultures (unless you get into physical anthro which is more bone related).  This is done through archaeology, cultural studies, and linguistics.  You will likely have to choose which of the four fields your focus will be by your junior year.

So, it can help you, but anthropology is not directly related to humanitarian work.  Also, some anthropologists are against alot of these humanitarian agencies because they believe that some agencies are not run well, cause more harm through ignorance of local customs, and they promote globalization.  There are pros and cons to these agencies, but I can't say that helping cyclone victims, AIDS orphans, and the starving is a bad thing at all, even if it does bring a bit of globalization.

I'm not trying to put you off anthropology - I loved it.  It's just not a humanitarian degree.  Good luck - it will help you see the world in a new light!

  2. Yes, an antrhopology degree will probably help. Think about it. If you're interested in helping people, understanding them is a prerequisite. If your modes of trying to help conflict with their cultural beliefs, you'll either not help, or possibly even make things worse.

If you want one way of answering your question, you could look at university antrhopology web sites, to see what they have to say about its uses in humanitarian work.

You can also go to job search sites, look for the sorts of things you're interested in doing (or go to non-profit sites you're interested in), and see what they require in the way of education.

  3. Yes.  You might want to take some sociology and psychology also.  Recently there has been a huge need for anthropologists in Iraq, needed by the Federal Government, to assist in mapping out cultural aspects (neighborhoods, families, etc.).  There are hundreds working over there now.  Add a second language to your resume and you will have no problems being employeed!
