Question:

Is anthropology a good major?

I applied to college undecided, but I've been thinking about majoring in anthropology. It sounds cheesy but I really want to go travel and find fossils, or ruins, or anything with history and culture involved. I just want some input on the kind of job opportunities and availability it would have.

  1. You know, it all depends on what you want to do any how long you are planning to go to school.  I got my undergrad degree in Sociology with a minor in Anthropology.  I loved the cultural aspect of Anthropology, but as far as career path a Soc degree is equal to an Anth degree.  Meaning if that is what you want to do you better plan on going to grad school, but don't let that stop you because now a days to get a decent job you have to have a masters.  I will tell you this, it is always better to do what makes you happy.  If the physical Anthropology aspects such as osteology (study of bones) or forensic make you happy then do it.  Pursue it because ultimately it will make your schooling a lot more enjoyable because  you will be interested and your quality of life will be great because you will ultimately end up with a career you love. So in my opinion, go for it.

  2. I can't be sure one way or the other, but you might try this: Talk to grads of your local anthropology program and see what they're doing. Local universities and colleges will probably be pleased to put you in contact with some of their grads.

For the record, I minored on anthropology when I got my first degree. Best job I ever had I got through that minor; I spent an extended summer working with a group of archaeologists, digging up bones & other cool stuff.

  3. Anthropology majors rock! (sorry, shameless plug!) Seriously though, to get a good job in anthropology, or in your case, archaeology, you have to go to grad school.

There really is a lot that you can do with an anthropology degree. Lately, more and more fields have been hiring anthropologists, not just social sciences, but also in the business world and other places.

    Good Luck!

  4. If you want to do those things then Anthro is for you! Major in biological or paleo Anthropology. You'll be going on digs before your senior year. In order to make a living in the field you need to either get a master's, PhD, or get lucky... or you can teach.

I love Anthropology! I can't recommend it highly enough.

  5. Not as good as biology, chemistry, genetics, or even math.

You know your intellectual level best, though.
