  1. I've always considered "sport fishing" as catch and release.

Catch and eat is yelling at the old man to hurry up because we're hungry.

Catch and hang above the mantle is only for very special times.  Like . . . the first fish you ever caught.  The HUGE swordfish that you spend 5 hours trying to haul in.  That sort of stuff.

  2. A sport is a physical activity you do for recreation. Fishing is a physical activity people do for recreation. Granted, there are some forms of fishing which don't involve much physical activity, but that's true of most sports. (Would you say that swimming isn't a sport because to some people their "swimming" just involves hanging onto the side of the pool?)

Fishing generally involves casting (accurate casting is not easy), winding in the line (can get tiring after a hundred casts in a couple of hours), hooking fish (sometimes easy, sometimes tricky), and winding in fish (sometimes easy, sometimes tricky, sometimes a lot of work). Except for long drawn-out battles with huge marlin or tuna, it's not physically challenging the way distance running or weight lifting is; but neither is horseback riding or car racing.
