  1. It's a club activity, and not a sport. Here's why.

    1. Cheerleading involves cheering on something, so its' dependance on another prevents it from being a sport. In that respect, it's no more of a sport than the student section.

    2. Any competitions are judged completely subjectively, more like a beauty pageant than a sport. You could argue the same with gymnastics, but they are at least required to perform certain feats with a moderate level of objectivity. But in cheerleading, it's entirely subjective scoring for each event save blatant rule violations. It's like figure skating, which, is itself not a true sport, despite representation in the olympics.

    3. Yes, you do work hard at it, but there are a lot of other activities that work hard to be good at what they do. Aerobics isn't a sport, yet the people work hard at what they do. Or how about railroad workers? They work really hard, but it's not a sport.

    4. There are no actual set rules for cheerleading. The few rules are fairly subjective and subject to easily changing. Contrast that with football and baseball which have had similar rules for much of their existance. Cheerleading, on the other hand, in its over 100 years of history, has never had a set of standards or rules.

But, I don't have a single thing against cheerleading. Infact, I love cheerleaders, most of them are definate eye candy.

  2. miss. i am a senior citzen . i did play pro box lacrosse for many years in canadaalso was fortunate enough to enjoy the hospitality of boston mid 70s . my opinion . with the practice that is required for other sports is shorter than a simple cheerleader practice , the more intense practices are brutal . also to retain a G.P.A. to stay on the squad require more intellinge than the average student has . cheerleaders , are better all around athletes than the team they cheer for , on a sports team you have other players to cover your mistakes . cheerleaders are a  perfect team . the smallest error is magnified requires percise timing . this is not true on the playing field . players wear pads , cheer squads do not , it is a very high injury risk sport . not minor , but major injuries . to not call cheerleading a sport is a insult to every person who partcipates in this co-ordinated team event . cheer practices can go as long as four hours . other sports 90 minutes max . i dont care how many people send thier stupid e mails or there thumbs down . just because this young lady is a better athelete than you , show her the respect she rightfully deserves . thank you

  3. I agree! I'm a cheerleader, so read this cause you might not know what it's about:

    1. During the summer, we train about 8 hours a week or more, half the time conditioning: running, situps, pushups etc.

    2. We tumble, which isn't doing cartwheels, try more like backhandsprings, back tucks, layouts, and full twists. look it up.

    3. We stretch until we almost pull our muscles every day.

    4. We do jumps, have you ever tried doing 3 toe touches without stopping? It takes some leg strength.

    5. You think lifting weights is hard? Try lifting up people! And try throwing them up and having to catch them at like 50 mph without having them hit you in the face.

    6. It's not a sideline sport, contrary to popular belief, we go to competitions. 5000 people watching you to make sure you don't make a mistake? Think pressure.

If anyone doesn't think that's a definition of a sport, clearly you've never participated in one.

  4. You do cheerleading at another sporting event, where everyone is paying attention to the real sport.

It's good exercise, but usually it is not really considered a sport because it is more of a sideshow for another sport.

  5. i totally am! cheerleaders work there butts off. they do more than just put on a show! you have to be strong to throw girls up in the air and to tumble and all that other stuff! with out a doubt cheerleading is a sport though its more of a sport then most sports in fact i saw a shirt that said something along the lines of the real athletes are on the side lines and my friend has a shirt that said that if cheerleading were easy it would be called football! not everyone can lift girls in the air and throw them feet into the air! i am so sick of it! good question!

  6. Cheerleading is not easy.

    And it is a sport.

    All the way.

    It takes strength,Flexibility,ext.

    And you do train.

    A lot!

    Like we train moday-friday

    6-8 pm.

    Somtimes longer.

  7. I'm sick of it. We do train hard or at least my team does. we run, do sit ups and pushups. v ups like crazy and some of us lift weights. cheering is hard. you have to learn about 12 million cheer and chants and some of them have the same words but you have to know the difference. we lift people into difficult stunts and the people are usually the same weight as us. and if your a flyer you have to worry bout the people liftin you. if theyre strong if theyre payin atention if theyre gonna drop you. if they do drop you will they catch you. and some people go to football games and such just to see cheerleaders. theres also competitive cheerleading. people go just for the cheerleaders.

  8. cheerleading is  not easy!

my friend who plays volleyball thinks its just so easy  when actually its probably harder than volleyball.we have to condition and work out ALOT to build up strength for stunts which are not easy.im a flyer & have been dropped plenty of times from eight feet in the air & almost broken my neck.bases get bloody lips and broken noses from trying 2 catch flyers. we do all of this stuff and basicly risk getting seriously injured for ppl to say its stupid, easy and not a sport??i know some ppl just think were there to look pretty and wear short skirts but it is soo much more than that.

  9. pshhhhh

    i cheer

    its no easy

it requires 2x as much training and practice as most other sports do

gymnastics and cheerleading need alot more recognition

    theyre sports too

theres a little sport called all-star cheerleading

we DONT cheer for football and all

and do more work than football players

    imagine:

running full speed to a stationary object

ahead of u that your about to flip over

    or:

    being thrown into the air

and EXPECTED to do a few flips

and come cradle into 3 hands below you

lets see football players do that...

    thank u and good evening

  10. cheerleading to a sport!! we train just as hard!! and when you think about it no other sports can through people up in the air like us cheerleaders do. ive been competitivley cheering for 3 years now and it is some hard stuff!! we go to workouts atleat 4 times a week for 2+hours each time!! and its non stop all through practice!! i think that there is no reason why cheerleading shouldnt be a sport!!  people who think its so easy need to try cheerleading for atleast a week and im sure they couldnt handle it! they need to try to be on a level 5 competition team!!

  11. People usually claim that cheerleading is not a sport is because

A: they've never cheered a single day in their lives, or

B: they've never cheered a single day in their lives.

Try not to worry about what others think. Just keep at it, it's your job as a cheerleader (assuming that you are one).  This kind of argument will never be won.  I've found that focusing on yourself and your sport/activity/hobby/whatever people are calling it these days is the best solution.

  12. i can understand sideline cheerleading being called a "non-sport", but any type where you compete (pop warner, rec, all-star, high school competition, college competitive, etc) is CERTAINLY a sport. i know that we train ATLEAST 10 hours a week, which is infact more than high school football teams (90 minutes every weekday, 7.5 hours a week). so we definitely train as much as other athletes. we flip and spin through the air, stand there and all of a sudden pull both legs above hip level, and throw 115 pound girls 15 feet in the air, all while keeping the crowd interested and making it look easy and flawless. i would definitely say all-star cheer is a sport, no question about it. if someone would lke to disagree, feel free to e-mail me, and i'll send you some videos of cheer teams. you THEN tell me it's not a sport.

some arguments i've heard are "it can't be a sport if it's based on juding". alright, what about gymnastics? figure skating? both have scoring based on judging. next question.

another is "it's not in the olympics". ...neither is football. explain that to me.

cheerleading's a sport. end of story

  13. I dont think its easy, but thers no reason to think everyone thinks its not a sport. Its just like all the other sports that arent recognized, even though they require lots of training.

But you can hardly say it requies much more training if you dont play the other sport. Im not going to say cheerleading is easy because I know its not-throwing people, all that stuff, must be really hard. But then soccer looks easy-until you actually learn to play. Just like other sports.

Whats everyones reasons here why cheerleading is so much harder? Thats what all the other answers say-dont complain that people think your sport is too easy if thats what you say about theirs

I know what you mean though. If you play a less popular sport (i do) you get less recognition-and its annoying-but that doesnt mean the popular sports are easy

  14. you guys dont do as much training as a sport is required
