I cant add much to the prior post, but the Coliseum is jaw dropping.  Also see the Borgasi Museum.

I'd recomend thinking about when you visit. The summer months are very hot and stifling and jammed packed with tourists. Indeed when I went to the Trevi Fountain a few years back I couldn't get anywhere near it for the sheer number of people. perhaps coming in autumn or spring would be more rewarding and relaxing.

The three most popular touring most tourists do when then come to Rome are:

1. Sistine Chapel/Vatican Museums/St Peters Basilica

2. Ancient Rome--Coliseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon

3. Momuments of Rome--Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Piazza Venezia

Also, you can see the pope on Wednesday at 10:30 when he has his audiences at St. Peter's Square.
