Manhattan & Melbourne City were tent settlements that got uprooted & relaid on a grid pattern by a Civil Engineer. State Library of Victoria has a pencil drawing of Melbourne just after this occured. It measures about 1 or 2 feet high by about 15 feet wide.

They dont have very  many tall buildings.Far from anything like New York.They have trams too,

Maybe 5 Starbucks.  No not otherwise alike. Not at all.  I have lived in both.  Why ask?  Why not take every city for what it has to offer.  Best of Melbourne is riding trams and trains and busses that go everywhere, better than NYC.  Good movie houses.  See Federation Square, and the train stations to appreciate the diverstiy of people.  Good fish and chips like London.  Wonderful laneways, where only people walk.  Hike along the river.  Amazing number of Asians as students; it is a very student-city.  Voted in several polls the best large city in the world to live in,  NYC is a better visit, so is Chicago and LA.  Hope that gets you started.  Cheers.
