  1. my husband says, that dirt is under your nails, SOIL is used to raise crops. I am not sure what research you're looking for but farmers do 'field research' pardon the pun, all the time, before fertilizers are added to fields and periodically soil samples are collected and processed to tell us which nutrients particular fields are lacking and we in turn add those nutrients to the soil on an as needed basis to keep our SOIL in good condition.

  2. In Africa, it is almost impossible to farm in the equatorial areas since there is the Sahara desert which desertified about 50% of Africa.

  3. Lord, give me strength.

To answer your question, yes, there is an active program to increase the quality of soil across the globe.  The increase in agricultural production in the US, Canada and Europe is a result of a balanced research program which includes the less s**y world of soil fertility as well as the well known enhancements due to plant breeding.  However, as you have demonstrated so well, the level of education and experience in the developed world remains in the hands of the very few (and a shrinking number of the experienced) not the many.  This situation is even worse in the third world nations.

  4. Yes agricultural scientist working on it used less water to grow batter and more food, there are  active program going on all around the wold. First need water, for water need eclectic to get water from deep in earth, It is all on money USA,Canada and Europa have money they are doing batter and getting more yield per hacker , If land is salty they have grass for that it take water and salt out or high level of water. Answer  is yes they are researching

  5. Please do not call it 'dirt', you are eating things grown from there. Please call it 'soil', give respect   earn respect.

Philosophy apart, lot of people working on the project, go to 'Subhash Palekar's farming' 'Deshpande's farming' 'Ancient Indian agriculture'. put those words in to search engines and get your answers.

  6. You actually do not need dirt, just a place to hold nutrient-rich water, and a substance to hold the plants to the roots are partially in this water and partially in the air.

    Hydroponics, my friend

  7. The desire and practice of making the soil better has been around for centuries. It is only recently that we have begun to understand why as opposed to the how. Anyone with access to any organic material can do it, and has done it. I have a composting book that is around 600 pages of PHD level material and still we have not exhausted this topic. I have to laugh with all the other answerer's, though, as you have sinned by calling soil, dirt. Dirt is unwanted and unclean while soil is to be cherished and loved.
