Question:

Is anybody educated about Hindu or Indian Goddesses?

I am looking to get a tattoo of an image I saw in a dream. It was a blue-faced (or blue skinned) indian goddess of some sort. It was entirely random. I'm not hindu or indian. I did notice on my research that there are many blue faced gods and such. Coincidence? I would like the goddess to represent peace of mind, because I am naturally a very nervous person. Any images or a good website would be so much help. I realize that many people would not get a tattoo of an image they saw in a dream but for some reason my dreams always have very deep meaning and they are very vivid. I know that somehow this image and tattoo will help me overcome some stressful situations that I'm dealing with right now and its very important to me. If you have any questions, just contact me. Thank you.

  1. If it was a female..then it was KALI..I think she destroys evil or somethin..look it up on the net...but def Kali if it was a female...

  2. Sometimes Kali is represented with a blue face (usually black, though). She would also have a long tongue and big teeth and look pretty darn scary...She's a demon-destroyer.

  3. the only Hindu deity i am aware of that is depicted blue is Krishna, and he is a MALE

  4. I can't say I'm all that educated in Hindu or Indian Goddesses, but the internet certainly is! I gave Google a run through and this seems like a decent list. Portraits included! Your description seems in keeping most with Krishna, but my absolute favorite is Saraswati (although she isn't blue faced), she is a simple of serenity of the spirit, but there's a lot more to her also. Durga is a good symbol of the powerful woman also, and stands for beauty and nobility. However, out of those, Krishna is the only blue skinned goddess (the others are a bit scary and not exactly serene).

In Hinduism and Indian mythology Krishna is the eighth avatar or reincarnation of the god Vishnu. Also Krishna is one of the most popular Hindu gods. Tradition holds that Krishna saw Vishnu in a vision in which the former deity told Krishna to destroy Kamsa son of a demon, a tyrannical ruler of the world. Krishna's mother, Devaki, was Kamsa's half-sister. Kamsa already killed her first six sons because he had been told one of her sons would kill him. Krishna' brother, Devaki's seventh child, Balarama was miraculously saved by Vishnu.

Krishna was also saved when exchanged by his parents for the daughter of a herdsman Nanda and his wife Yasoda (the daughter was also a divine being, an incarnation of Maya). With his foster parents Krishna spent a happy life playing boyish pranks and seducing the gopis (cow girls) and other rustic maidens. They found his flute playing irresistible. Legend has it he may have had 16,000 wives. But his favorite was Radha, daughter of his foster father, and his childhood lover, although they did not marry.

According to legend Krishna was not only divine, but heroic as well. He is alleged to have defeated numerous dragons and monsters, and eventually as predicted, killed his half-uncle the tyrannical king Kamsa.

In the epic poem 'Mahabharata' he helps the Pandavas against the Kauravas, two families in contention. In the poem Krishna is depicted as divine. Also in the poem he delivers his celebrated oration 'Bhagavad-Gita' on duty and life to the troubled Hero Arjuna, for who he was a charioteer, on the eve of the decisive battle. This speech persuaded Arjuna that it was right to fight against his kinsmen.

His "Song of the Adorable One" is one of the great philosophical poems. There are certain parallels between his birth and infancy and that of Christ's which tend to link these two important figures together.

In art Krishna is usually portrayed as blue-skinned.

  6. The Goddess Tara originated as a Hindu goddess, the Mother Creator, representing the eternal life force that fuels all life, and crossed over into Tibetan Buddhism, where she is regarded as a Bodhisattva of Compassion. There are many embodiments of Tara, each with her own color. Blue Tara is associated with the transmutation of anger.

To clear up any confusion from the above posters, Krishna is male.

  7. It's Lord Krsna
