Is anybody else having a hard time finding a teaching job or any other job?

I've applied and applied. It probably doesn't help that I live in one of the worse off states in America. I live in Michigan. I already moved across the country for a teaching job but the schools in Arizona were a joke. So now I'm back to square one.

Should I feel ashamed if I only sub for a year to get my foot in the door? I feel like a failure even though I know that the economy is doing really bad.

  1. You're not alone at all. I live in the worst place in Michigan to find a job (Detroit of course) and if it's not a job that is 30 miles away from here,  there are tons of stay at home and survey scams that flood the job search engines.

If you can sub to get your foot in the door, go for it! Be grateful for what you can get out here, there are quite a few people who can't get a thing! Folks are on the verge of facing the chopping block every day here so if you find a small fish you'll have a decent meal (although a big fish would be better). However it is better to get something small than to get nothing at all.

I know it's so tough, hon, but we're all gonna make it together. I just hope it will be real soon...

  2. Yes.  The economy is very tough for those seeking employment in nearly any industry.  Good luck on your search.

BTW, I used to teach at a boarding school for three years.  When I wanted to leave the profession and try something else, I moved to Texas and substitute taught for a year while I looked at my options.  I don't think you should be embarrassed about that.

  3. You moved from one state and called their school system a joke, yet that is a whole system that has been functioning with and without you.

Teaching is not a glomourous job, it has a lot of politics.

It is what we call the real world and what you learned in college is not always the norm in the real world.

You may need to move again and this time bite the bullet and stay for more than a years. Try 2 years next time, and watch how the new system works and after a short period of time implement some of your ideas slowly and you wont be shut down.

Never blame the system that you wanted to be a part of as they will be the recommendation that you will need for the next gig. And with all politics (teaching is a political environment) you can never burn a bridge.

BTW: Texas needs Teachers and they pay well, homes are cheap and nice, people are friendly and have fun. Good Luck
