There also called sawyer beetles I think.. there are tons at our cabin in saskatchewan and we live in alberta and I havnt noticed them anywhere else than saskatchewan... they are big ugly beetles that sit on your screen and fly around like a small army helicopter and go click click click click really loud when their flying... they fly out of the trees and land on you and honest to god i'd rather be stung by a bee than be bit by one of them.. they take chunks out of your skin and their hard to crush like cockroaches. there pretty uncommon because they are not on wikipedia and there are not many pictures of them but I hate them.. their antenass are twice the length of their body does anybody else know what im talking about?

  1. Actually they are in Wikipedia under their common family name: Long Horned Beetles.  There are many different types and all have those wonderful long antennae.

Yes, they make a racket when they fly and you can actually hear them munch thru wood, hopefully not those beams in your ceiling.  Often they are brought in accidently with firewood.

When they are flying, they are impessive and do hurt if they bump into you.  Pity the poor tree that has them inside.  If they are as numerous as you say in your area, your trees are in trouble.

No matter how big they are, they will do you no harm.  The real deadly bugs are the smaller ones.......mosquito, flea,  or tick for example and the diseases they carry.

  2. No, I happen to like insects.

There's nothing to be afraid of, they're just little animals that aren't any less worthy of living than a sweet little kitty, or a big old hound dog.    It's just that they wear their skeleton on the outside and aren't furry and warm like a puppy, that we get all freaked out by them.

Actually, those long antennae make them look quite elegant - they are a beautiful work of nature - why not catch them in a bottle or a little plastic box and evict them from your house - respectfully, of course!   :-)

  3. i had one on me in Illinois out in the woods,it wasn't making noise so i didn't notice it    but the dog did.when i finally noticed it (it was dark and on my leg) i thought it was a tarantula(there is a Missouri tarantula) those 2 big pincher's looked like legs in the dark.I screamed like a girl, thanked the dog too

  4. OMG I'm terrified of them!! Everyone I know is as well. Blech!! I live in northwestern ontario and we have them here too.

Try looking them up under June Bugs..we call them that here also.
