What is being a diplomatic officer like, what are the disadvantages and advantages?

I am entering university next year and am planning to take a Law Degree as well as an arts degree majoring in International relations and Political science. In my second year of university I am going to go overseas on a student exchange. I also plan to learn either Spanish or Italian. I plan to join the international students law club, international culture clubs and may join toastmasters. My strengths include writing, debating, counseling, economics, computers ect .. I love travelling but most importantly being immersed in another culture and sharing my own with other people.

Do you have any advice for me or any further information about your job that I may find useful?

Thankyou

P.S I live in New Zealand where you do not need to pass a test such as the one in USA ... however there are only 300 diplomatic officers in New Zealand and only 10 - 20 people are recruited each year.

  1. Hey

    I recommend you email Foreign Affairs and ask if they have any part time positions. It'll be good to get a step in the door and you'll get paid to do something you love doing.

    I'm lucky I've got the contacts already but if you're really keen you should email them and ask, or try different Government departments.

    Good luck.

    "The Ministry is seeking people with:

    Excellent analytical skills, proven in almost any discipline;

    high-level oral and written communication skills;

    strong people skills; self-confidence and the ability to relate and work with a diverse range of others; a good post-graduate degree: honours degree or higher; or a conjoint degree including either law or economics; and an interest in international issues and New Zealand’s engagement with the world."
