  1. My father was an interventional radiologist. While he is no longer with us to answer these questions, I can do my best to speak for him.

He worked from about age 28 (after fellowship) to age 50 when he first retired. From age 50 to his passing at 59, he worked sporadically. Call it a net of 30 years, since he kept up on his CMEs and could never spend more than few months not doing something in IR.

His largest ethical challenge was actually with a coworker. He discovered his partner was "drinking and doctoring" and had to deal with the legal and ethical consequences. It was a very stressful situation.

He loved the field. I sincerely wish I could answer this one better but I just know that it was down to psychiatry, pathology, anesthesiology, and radiology for him. When he finally did his residency, he found his stride in radiology working under the founding father of Interventional Radiology. My father helped pioneer the field under a man named Stan Cope.

He would always complain about the politics. Always. The greatest challenge to doctors is the red tape. Even other physicians are not always interested in just doing their job but one-upping everyone else. It's a long story that I spent 18 years listening to over dinner before I went off to college.

He had a lot of great moments. One girl, whose life he saved when she was a teenager, still sends him Christmas cards (she's well into her 30s now). He has mentored countless X-ray techs whom he just admired for their talent and dedication. He got to remove the six bullets from Mumia Abu-Jamal when the famous cop killer came into his ER back in the 80s. The rewarding experiences would be much better spoken from his perspective, sorry.

Well, his mentor co-founded the field of Interventional Radiology. He used that momentum plus his then-young age to turn IR into a growing field. He has patented a catheter that is used today in procedures and co-hosted annual conferences out in Las Vegas, which hundreds if not thousands of physicians attend.

He is the most admirable man I've ever met. Not just because he is my father but because he is remarkable.
