I see so many people on this Rugby forum asking how they can build up there muscles. You don't need to do all these waits to play rugby or be big. Just be fit, do sit ups and pushups and that’s it. I have never touched a single weight and I am a forward flanker who is fairly fast, and can ruck and maul fine. You don't need big muscles or need to have a big body structure to play Rugby. You just need to be healthy and do things like pushups and sit ups and that’s it.

  1. depends if you aspire to be a forward or one of the backs...but overall stamina is key in Rugby

  2. I agree with ya A J. Sick of those forsaken questions.

  3. I think it depends entirely on what the person feels they need to be competative in their chosen position. If they feel they need to do weights and bulk up, then as long as they couple it with endurance training, running etc, then they should persue that path. It may just become the mental strength they need to become sucessful.

You are right to a point AJ you don't need to be big and bulky in most cases. I am 146cms and 51kgs and I have no problem at all on the rugby field. I tackle and make hit ups just as much as the guys do. (Mind you I do get thrown about a lot too..hehe)

You DO need to be strong and fit though.

  4. And besides, being big doesn't really help, the bigger you are, the more of you there is to tackle. I'm 6ft2, I know this.

  5. People never get it that rugby is a lower body game. Huge muscles in your upper body does help, but very little compared to your legs.
