Question:

Is anyone else getting fed up with the "speed limit" advert rubbish?

They keep on about speed limit for a reason, yes it was, it was 30 as that was roughly the maximum speed of a horse and due to car and horse accidents in the 1920's the maximum of a horse was adopted in town. The same analogy was adopted in 1966 with car speeds, the basic cars, Morris 1000, A40, Triumph Herald and most motorcycle combos had a top speed of about 70 to 75 and to reduce accidents with powerful cars overtaking the blanket limit of 70 was adopted, the inference being no overtaking so everything would go at 70. Any prat that says its for economy etc is having you on, I built my mini in the 70's to have a top speed of 90 with best economy between 60 and 70 mph and giving about 35 to the gallon. They bought in a 50 limit, fuel economy soared in hilly regions and did not alter in say motorway use.

Further, assuming the driver had time to see the child then his speed is under the limit anyway.

  1. I THINK THESE IS EVERYBODY'S PROBLEM INCLUDING YOU AND I.

  2. i wouldnt be alive now if it wasnt for the speed limits, i got hit at 30 mph, got put in a coma and stayed in the coma for a month, woke up and started my intensive rehabilitation back into normal society once again.

so yeah i think speed limits are good even if you dont.

  3. sorry i cant watch that advert any more me because i have been to road traffic accidents involveing children and that advert is too realistic for me it just makes me angry and upset every time i see it . i know its apart of my job going to road traffic accidents and cleaning them up but its not every day i see a child involved but that advert just brings so many memoreys back to me . but in an other hand i think its a good thing that the advert is on to just show what it is realy like when some one hit a child with a car or a child is in volved in a road collision but the advert is too relistic which i think is a good thing

  4. i further agree.  Speed limits are c**p.

  5. Adverts like that are intended to attack your emotions not your intellect, in my opinion, so I don't like them.

Personally, I think the speed limits are too high in residential areas.  I think they should be 20 not 30.  Children should be taught to be safe pedestrians from a young age, of course, but drivers need to accept that their cars and big and heavy and the faster they go the longer they take to stop...we need to give parents a chance to do their job by doing ours (as drivers) well and safely.

Few English roads are straight enough to provide sufficient visibility to make the higher speeds safe, in my opinion.  I'd rather leave my home a bit early, drive safely and get there with everyone, including myself, remaining in one piece.

What I find a real distraction, though, are the speed signs which post accident statistics on them...my mind shouldn't be occupied with the contents of such a sign, it should be on the road.

If we all concentrated on the road a bit more, drove as though other drivers and pedestrians were our family members, there would be fewer accidents.

  6. I am certainly fed up with the "for a reason" adverts, which are patronising.

And I do think that in most situations it is quite safe to drive above the speed limit if visibility is good. However there are some situations where you do need to slow down.

More effort should be put into addressing the real causes of most car accidents - such as driving too close to the car in front of you.

  7. i think that sped limits could now be raised on the motorways and dual carriageways, as cars are more capable of driving at high speeds more safely nowadays.

the 30 limit is absolutely fast enough in built up and residential areas though.

  8. There are elements of what you say I agree with. Some places could do with a rethink as the limit was imposed and since had major road works with no reviews. There is also the fact that brakes have improved twenty fold,,but a limit is a limit.Wouldn,t it be nice though if everyone who says this agreed to all other aspects of life, but they don,t.They try to tailor life to there requirements.Example,i live rural, and go through many villages where people i know campaigned for 20mph around the local school and got it,are the ones overtaking me in the 20 zone. They think because its there village and they know the road,it doesn,t apply to them because they are local. But in general the laws are ok,its the people trying the exempt for me rule i don,t like.

  9. Okay..........But what you you trying to say ????

  10. Here in Phoenix we have the speed detection cameras. If you are 11 miles over the posted speed you get a nice picture of you and a bill for $150 in the mail. Since then, I have slowed my speeding ways.

  11. The onus always seems to be on drivers , and never on teaching pedestrians to keep off the roads !

  12. i drive for a living and can see why there are speed limits in built up areas, i think in and around schools especially near the beggining and end of a school day the speed limit should be reduced to say 15mph as most kids dont have much road sense

  13. Whatever the advert might be, I get much better mileage holding at 62 instead of going 68-70 on Interstate where limit is 65.  If you got best economy between 60-70 in a mini and as high as 35 to the gallon, then you slowed down going up hills because you didn't have the gearing to make it to the top at speed - I recall my VW.

Seeing the child being under the limit means the roads are all designed for visibility (ha!) and not just for getting around curves safely at the limit.  And even with the limits posted there are still people who try to go 20 mph faster than traffic and dodge lanes and pull right up on your rear bumper.  What would they do without limits?

  14. I think you are yet another selfish driver, whilst I love children and am prepared to obey the speed limits.

  15. Agreed.  However even cars that have a top speed of 70 does not prevent them doing 70 in a 30 zone.  And how do you prevent this?  Welcome to the Big Brother state...
