  1. Go to "medline plus" and type in "Apraxia"  It is very informative.

  2. Apraxia is basically the inability to get the words fromyour head out your mouth--there a fw different processes involved-one or more could be the cause of apraxia.

Some professioals think apraxia is a myth.  Even the ones that do diagnos it are hesitant to give that label to a 2 year old as language is often inaccurate at that age.

There are many causes of speech delays-from delayed development that will catch up to autism

there is a generic diagnosis called Expressive Language Disorder

If you haven't already-contact your states Early Intervention program.  They will evaluate your child for teh need of speech therapy.

  3. Yes. It's when you know what you want to say, but you just can't say it. I know that this happens to everybody, but for people with apraxia, this is an everyday occurance. You can imagine what you want to say, but you have difficulty finding the words that you want to use.

A lot of times, people with apraxia will unintentionally communicate the wrong message to people. They have difficulty with social skills because of this.

Your child will need as much support as you can give him or her. They need not only your patience, but the patience of others that they converse with and have patience with themselves. When your child gets older, they may get embarassed by their speech difficulties and get frustrated themself.

One thing that will work to your child's advantage is that if people care about what you're saying, they will listen and do their best to interpret what they are saying.

The good news is that there is help. You should take him or her to a speech pathologist to get evaluated. They will be able to assess your child's abilities and give him or her the help he or she needs.

I would also have a psychologist evaluate your child for any sort of learning disabilities or take him or her to the psychiatrist or neurologist to be observed for autism. Apraxia doesn't normally occur by itself.

This is a listserv and email forum run by people who have apraxic children and working with the top therapists in PA.  These people are incredibly smart and caring.  Best of luck.
