Is anyone here Italian or familiar with Italy?

I will be going to Italy in early September with two friends. We have already booked the flights and hotels: will be staying in Rome for 3 nights and Milan for 3 nights.

My questions are:

a) In your opinion, where are the best places to visit in Rome, Milan, Florence and Venice (we will be taking day trips from Milan)

b)What is the best and cheapest way to travel from Rome to Milan?

c)Any other tips? We're student so don't want to spend too much money.

  1. i'm italian...suit next to venice...what very beautiful is!

    rome...i don't like it a lot...

milan and florence are very beautiful...

  2. so: in rome you should visit: colosseo, altare della patria, s. pietro cathedral (book tickets in advance), navona square, spagna square, the forum, the pantheon, trevi fountain.... it could be an infinite list...

in milan i can take you anywhere as a guide because it's my city, i study languages, i studied art and it could be fun (of course i do it for free...).

i think you shouldn't take day trips from milan to venice and florence because:

    a) it takes about 3/5 hours by train and it's quite expencive

    b) you cannot visit such wonderful cities on a single day trip

just avoid it and fully enjoy rome and Milan!

  3. cheeper in rome?

    ask for "ostello della gioventù"

    on milan i don't know

  4. cheapest way to travel around italy is on coaches..

milan to venice is not a day trip it's a long way...

why not stop off in florence for a night then go on to milan....

i live in southern italy and i can't help you with places in milan as i've never been, although my italian friends tell me it's a boring place with nothing to see..

rome on the other hand is full of treasures from the imperial forum, coloseum, saint peter's, the vatican, the catacombs.. fantastic.. i love rome..

as for not spending much money i'm afraid your going to the wrong places if you wish to save,,, milan and rome are expensive

  5. well i haven't been to rome or milan but the best way to travel in any part of italy is by the l'autobus (bus) costing 2 euros for a return trip. But its a good long trek from roma - milano and u say Venezia as well good luck in coverin that in 6 days cos its not advisable. But if u do manage to get to Venezia its amazin i fell in love with it as soon as i got there, but its so expensive so go over the rialto bridge and u c the real streets on Venezia and its so much cheaper, a great example is the italian football shirt it was 15 euros on one side of the bridge and wen u crossed over to the cheaper side it was 5 euros it was amazin so defo try nd make it there, u'll b blown away, its so Stunning and beautiful. I wanna go bac just writin bout it  lol. Have fun though and defo try their pizza and ice cream the best u'll ever have and thts a promise :D

  6. cheapest way to travel around italy is on coaches...

In rome you can see the colosseum, vatican and more...

  7. You've lined yourself up with a huge itinerary.

Rome - where to begin? You could start with the Palatine, forum and Colosseum. Buy tickets online before you go, or buy them at the Palatine where queues are short rather than spending hours queueing at the Colosseum.

You could also visit the Vatican, but if you do this you should go with a guide - there is so much art in there you would simply b overwhelmed without someone to show you some of the highlights.

There are lots of other museums Villa Borghese, Villa Giulia etc. The rest, Spanish steps, Trevi fountain can be seen while walking the city and the Pantheon is a must.

If you feel a need for a break from the city for one day, take a trip to Tivoli for Villa Adriana (Hadrian's villa) and/or Villa d'este which has spectacular Renaissance gardens.

To get from Rome to Milan, realistically there are only 2 options - rail or air. I don't know anything about cheap internal flights in Italy, but the rail journey is about 6 hours or 4.5 if you opt for the more expensive Pendolino service.

Once in Milan, you have opted for 2 long days out in Venice and Florence, both are 2.5-3 hours away by train. If you are set on these then in Venice the best is to be had just wandering around and enjoying the ambience - take the river taxi up the Grand Canal and maybe explore the Doges Palace in St Mark's Square. In Florence, there is the Campanile, Duomo and Uffizzi gallery (book before you go for this one) and again a lot just to be seen and admired on foot.

This will not really leave you much time to do anything in Milan itself, but again you can admire much on foot from the outside. There is the Duomo, castle containing a good art gallery and La Scala opera house. It is a great shopping city too. There are lots of markets, Mercato di Viale Papiniano has lots of clothes bargains.

If you think you have chosen to go too far and do too much (I do, you'll not get the best out of anywhere once you leave Rome) then Verona is closer to Milan and is small and manageable for a day trip. You could even go to the opera in the amphitheatre at night. Also, a day out at Lake Garda might be a good end to a trip with lots of cities.

On the money saving side - Rome and Milan are the two most expensive cities in Italy. In Milan especially cut down on costs of eating by buying some of your food from the market. Also, all of those miles by train are going to add up, so I would think again before making a mad dash to all of those cities.

  8. If you are ladies just ask around were to go. must see Spanish stairs in Rome. Milan watch out for the train station doggie people but train is the best way and cheapest way to travel in Italy used to live there for 4 years. keep to together. Venice you need a hole day its so much to see very expensive too. Have a fab time and people are very helpful if you ask them.

  9. Sorry, but I'm afraid you think Italy is a very small country... really you can't make "trips" from Milan to Venice or to Florence, you risk to waste most of your time on travel and not to be able to see each city. Venice and Florence are wonderful and full of things to see, one day would be not enough, and spending there few hours is really not worth. You would also spend a lot of money for train tickets. You'd better visit just Rome and Milan.

In Rome you "must" visit at least the Coliseum and the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona... Rome is full of wonderful churches you can visit totally free. The Vatican is amazing but wait queues (for both St Peter church and Vatican Museum) are awful. Another beautiful museum to visit, (and less tiring than Vatican Museum), is the Galleria Borghese in the middle of the park Villa Borghese.

WARNING! From Rome to Milan the cheapest way is FLYING, if you reserve early you can find very low cost tickets (Ryanair) from Roma Ciampino to Orio al Serio. Trains are rather expensive, particularly Eurostar and AV.

In Milan the best monument is the Cathedral (Duomo), you can also see the Scala Theater, the Castello Sforzesco, Pinacoteca di Brera and the Cenacolo Vinciano.

  10. from milan i think is better if u visit milan, turin and genoa..

then go to rome and visit florence 2..

venice u should take a trip only for it...is away from the other cities...u can do rimini-venice...

  11. You have chosen the wrong place to go if you dont want to spend much money =/

  12. Hi!

I'm from Milan but I visited Rome.

Great differences between Milan and Rome are: language (Milan is a multicultural city and speaks a standard Italian, Rome has a typical dialectal accent), life (Milan is the centre of Italian Economy and Work, while Rome is more linked to Tourism).

Milan is a very big city, it is a "little" New York.

Milan has inserted its Cultural Heritages in its new life. And you will see Duomo, Teatro Alla Scala, Castello Sforzesco, Santa Maria delle Grazie exc...near all the newest buildings.

Milan has many shops and boutiques. Footbridges are many but...is difficult entering if you have no invites ;o(

People here, buy media at Ricordi Mediastore, Messaggerie Musicali, Mediaworld, Saturn, and Cloths at Miss Sixty, Footlocker, Levi's, Nadine, Zara, exc...You will find the boutiques linked to the cloths showed in the footbridges by Armani, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Biagiotti exc...in Via della Spiga or Via Montenapoleone near Duomo and Teatro alla Scala, but they are very very expensive! (For example an hat...1000 euros...).

    as for pubs...Milan is fantastic!

We have great discos: Alcatraz, Rolling Stone, Hollywood, de Sade, ...Pubs: Cowboys Guest Ranch, Milwaukee'd Diner, Angelo Nero, exc...and many beautiful places with beaches and tropical swimming pools, like Acquatica, The Beach ad Idroscalo Punta dell'Est, or very fashion places like Cheval Cafe (At Ippodromo near the Leonardo's Statue), Just Cavalli Cafe (The local of Cavalli, a stylist), exc...I send you a link in which yu will find all the most famous discos, pubs, hotels exc.. of Milan even if it is written in Italian: http://www.milanonotte.it/discoteche_mil...

Rome has a very beautiful centre and many many things to visit!And...Venice...has to be seen totally!!!Venice is only in the world.A city on the water, without cars. Venice was built completely on the sea....thousands years ago.

The cheapest way to travel from Rome to Milan is surely by Train www.trenitalia.it

To have cheapest hotel in Milan you have to stay quite far from the Centre and the Station. Milan is not big as New York, so even the farest places...are near ;o)

See the map of the Underground www.atm.it and you can find near the Subway.

    Have a nice journey!!!

P.S. This website was very good in finding cheap hotels for youngs!I stayed in London this New Year's Eve 10 night for 300 euros!
