How did you cope at school ?

How did teachers/class mates deal with it ?

& personally how did you feel about the whole thing ?

Was there anything you gained from it, & what has been your best ever subject ?

I'm writing a piece about it after reading stories & i would love to know how other people deal with it. I think how frustrating it must of been knowing that your not thick, nor stupid, but teachers treat you like a child! - when that shouldn't be the case. There should be teachers helping with dyslexia instead of trying to ignore the fact that a child has it.

  1. my boyfriend is 19 years old and was diagnosed dyslexic in elementary school...and because his is so severe he was never taught how to read or write in cursive... he does everything on the computer because if he does spell it wrong there is no erasing and all that.. he refuses to write notes unless it is necessary and get angry sometimes when people cant read what he does choose to write...he does get frustrated easily sometimes when he is reading or doing homework but i think it is just the way he has know it for so long that he isn't afraid  to ask someone to tell him what a word is..

  2. hello i am a 10th grader and i am dyslexic. I was diagnosed when i was in 7th grade its not so tough anymore the first year was tough because my friends suddenly new i was in special ed which they thought i was plain stupid. its gotten easier through the years but its because i am in special ed and they help me out a lot. i also attend a specialized school in which they also help me out.

  3. My 11 year old son is dyslexic. He has an IEP at school ,he is  gives his tests orally and notes from other students to study from. He has an instructional aid for general education class room, he does get harassed by a hand full of students. Science and History are his strong points, orally he is exceptional his memory is his strong point. The best thing you can do is EDUCATE your/his school  staff. Nichcy.org has free handouts about all learning disability's. I hope this helps Vicky

  4. I'm a special educator teaching dyslexic kids... It is frustrating for the kids when teachers ignore them.. very often the ignorance is due to a lack of knowledge about dyslexia.. the teachers ignore the kids and think they are stupid because they don't know about dyslexia and don't know the difficulties faced by dyslexics in schools..

  5. Hi Darl, I'm Dyslexic And These Days With Word Processors And The Like It's Not Such A Big Problem.

I Was In School Throughout The 70's And For The Most Part Was Just Treated As Slow Or Lazy. I Still Ended Up With 7 O' levels But It Took Heaps Of Hard Work And Two Attempts To Reach That Total.

My Parents Encouraged Me With My Reading And Doing Crosswords Every Day Which Is A Huge Help, I Still Do The Daley Crossword.

My Best Subjects Were Biology For Which I Got A Grade B, Music (I Taught Myself To Play The Flute And Don't Read Music) And Woodwork For Which I Won The School Prize.

  6. yeah am dyslexic,(and a few other things).  All the teachers I had ware cool with it, the much bigger problem I had was with other students. Classmates would do things like switch papers with me, since I never read the name on the top anyway.  If we had something to read out loud in class the teacher would never get around to picking me.  Teachers generally knew I knew the information even if I failed a test.   People will think your smart if you ask the right questions so I'd try to ask pertinent questions.   Most folks generally thought I was smart enough. They would say things like: “some boys don't read until there older” or “it's not unusual for boys to not read until there 12.”

I was a complete failure at test. People where more befuddled be my inability then any thing else. Non of them really cared because they knew I knew the information.

I was good at math theory... my only problem was I can't remember more then 3 numbers at once.

I love maps. My mom would hang giants maps on the wall for me since I didn't read or she would take me to the library to get books on tape or listen to the storytellers. I also had a set of Lincoln logs I'd use to express my self. Like Paul R I owe a big thanks to me mom.

I didn't start reading until I was 12.  I dropped out of normal school at the end of that year because it seamed a little slow. I started teaching myself and lo three years latter I had taut myself chemistry, trig, drafting, home inspecting, and gotten my high school diploma.

Anyway I love being  dyslexic and wouldn't change if you paid me. You tend to march to your own beat. I herd on NPR that 35% of entrepreneur are dyslexic and only 1% of managers. Thinking and learning in pictures rather than words is like thousands of times faster.

    P.S.

The last time I took a spelling test I spelled a 5th grade level.(on a watered down test)  I'm wring this with  NaturallySpeaking 10.

  7. I have dyslexia. I went to one of the first special education classes. That was in the early 70's when this whole special ed thing was new. Teachers did not know what they were doing. There was no formal training for teachers at that time.

Many of my teachers called me stupid and dumb. Told me that I would never go to college or get a job. But here was this one teacher in my high school that taught English. He notice that I had troubles with reading and writing. He was one of those long hair hippie type of teachers. It so happens that his theist was on dyslexia. He helped me understand what I had and how to decode words so I could read, and write. He worked with me for two yrs. I still have dyslexia but can work through it, most of the time. I use the computer for spell and grammar check when I write a letter or term paper.

I am going to college with a 3.40 gpa, working on an AA degree.  I currently work at a high school as an special education instructional assistant II.
