Question:

Is anyone studying sociology or has the degree in sociology already?

im planning to major in sociology but still undecided. can anyone that is in the sociology field share with me what i should expect and how hard is it to major in sociology? do i have to be a social and extrovert person? what if i am reserve and shy, can i still major in this field? im so lost...and i need to pick a major soon. i am interested in society as a whole and loves to learn about people and how they live and interact. maybe that is a good sign??

  1. No, you certainly do not need to be an extrovert to major in sociology.  In fact, it is usually the "people watchers" who make the best social scientists.

    In my years of teaching sociology I have found that there are generally three types of students who major in sociology:

    1) Students who just need a college degree to get the job they want or the promotion they need.  These students could pretty much major in anything and they would be okay.

    2) Athletes who are looking for an easy major.

    3) Students who are genuinely interested in pursuing sociology.  However, to actually get a job as a social scientist, however, you'll need to at least get an M.A. or Ph.D.


  2. I got a BA in sociology and then became a truck driver ;P

    I may go back and get a MA or PhD but that takes quite a while.  If you don't mind going to school for a very long time then sociology is an ok major.  Incidentally truck drivers make a comparable and often times a better wage than sociology professors.  With that said I would love the prestige of being a sociology professor.  The previous answer is better ;P
