Nobody with intelligence is standing behind him. But plenty of people that lack it, are with him all the way.

You should know that 'South America is a good place for tin horn dictators' - you have been overthrowing democracies and installing dictatorships for a century now.

Chavez was democratically elected, which is definitely not true of the regimes which your internationally criminal government supports.

His main drawback, in US eyes, is that he is using proceeds from his countries resources to make life better for the people and not siphoning them off to himself and a few extremely rich supporters from the US.  Even worse, he is assisting disadvantaged people in the US with cheap oil.

US media reports deserve salt grains until the wheat is separated from the weapons of mass destruction.  Reaction of some sort to US criminal activities and efforts to destabilise the country and his government may have provoked some actions which are now being misreported.
