Is there any "off" brand that costs a lot less? I really want that but 50.00 is really a lot for me. Is anything comparable for less money?

  1. I have never worn that brand...many people do because they get caught up in brand names.

Shop for synthetic long underwear...and you will find tons of stuff that is a lot cheaper that still does the main job: wicks sweat from the skin, and keeps you dry and warm.

The most important thing to do is dress in layers. When I ski, I wear a synthetic long john long sleeve top, a t-neck over that, and then either a windbreaker or a warmer winter jacket.

Here is a link to Campmor with some applicable items. Bottoms, tops, and other things. Browse around to what interests you. Of course, there are lots of websites with the same types of things. Google in outdoors wear, or something like that. Try Cabellas, REI, etc.

  2. Under Armour is very, very overrated for the outdoors.  They're comparable to Oakley in terms of sheer marketing, but as overpriced as Oakley is, people generally don't criticize them for inferior performance.  That can't be said for UA.  Very few truly hardcore outdoors people use them.

They feel very warm in the store and UA talks up their fabric performance, but in reality the nylon and spandex content (both materials form hydrogen bonds with water) in their clothing actually dries much slower and keeps you wetter than even plain polyester long-johns, not to mention high-performance baselayers from Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Marmot, TNF, Mountain Hardwear, etc.

Go to REI (or MEC, or Campmor as mentioned by the previous poster) and you can even find store-brand stuff that works better than UA, while costing much less.
