  1. Art is not necessarily a scam or rip of. Although there are artists who do scam as a statement. And there are scam artists that are simply that.

Damien Hirst is brilliant and would be so whether or not white or black.

    Bansky is what he is.

Take a look at Basquiat. Young, Black, and Brilliant. And gone way too soon. And he made a lot of money. Art star.

I tend to agree with you that some folks buy art for the status. Some folks buy a lot of their stuff for the status of it. Look at what they drive or wear. Look at their cell phones, shoes, clothes, Xbox, iPods, iPhones, and all that. Brandwashing.

Other people buy art for other reasons, collectibility, the value of the actual work. By this I mean the creative and communication value. Or because the piece resonates with them. They connect with it.

Art does cost money, like anything else because it takes money to make. And because there is value to each artist and their creativity. As the demand for their work grows so does the value. Of course, once you start adding middle men, galleries, representatives and such, yes indeed, art can easily become out of reach for the everyday Jane or Joe.

  2. Art is not a scam.  There are some scam artists in every walk of life, so some artists are scamming people.  But art itself is not a scam, it's whatever value anyone places in it.
