Is asking (dropping hints) for a cell phone as a graduation present too much?

Ok so Im 13 and alot of my friends have their own cell. My mom's excuse for me not to get one is cause I get to pay the bill.. :(. Though not having one doesn't bother me that much cause Im not really out alot and Im not exactly willing to pay a bill each month.

Im going into Grade 8 this year and I will be graduating in June. I thought it might be reasonable to possibly ask for one since I will be going into Grade 9 and so...

Im not asking for anything crazy fancy, but I don't want a piece of junk either and I would probably do the pay as you go thing..

Speaking of pay as you go.. can you text with buying a phone card every so often?

  1. It is cool to ask for this . I am a mom and my kids got theirs b4 Grad MS, but they are in band and other activities. It is not fair to other parents for my children to use their phones to call me to come and get them after games and such.

  2. I think you should have a cell phone start out with a prepay one if your mom doesn't want to pay the bill then ask if there is anything that you can do to earn it.

  3. Both of my kids received cell phones as middle school graduation gifts, so I think it's a reasonable request.  We actually found that it was much cheaper for them to get an inexpensive phone on our plan and add them to our plan.  We pay the monthly fee ($10 each) because we like them having a cell phone so that we can stay in touch with them, but they pay for overages. My daughter offered to pay for unlimited texting (since she is the Text Queen, and had to pay $115.00 one month in text overcharges!), so she pays us$20 a month for that.

We tried it with a pay-as-you-go phone, but we found that it was actually cheaper to add them to our plan -- we got a nicer phone for free, and didn't get charged for every second, since all our calls within the family were free.

  4. some pay to gos have plans you could buy for texting. i'm not sure how that works, though. a prepaid one would be your best bet if you're planning on asking for one. it will show you are responsible and then maybe your parents will think about getting you a real one.

  5. I don't think that its asking for too much. You seem old enough and mature enough to have one. So you don't have to pay a monthly bill, i suggest buying a pay as you go phone. You buy the phone, and you buy a card for either $25, $50, or $100 depending on the amount of minuets you want. My daughter was around 12 when she got her first cell phone, and in the middle of grade seven. I bought the phone for her for Christmas, and the pay as you go card. But with her allowence she pays for a new card when she runs out of minuets.

  6. i did not get my first until grade 9 xmas....but i was going nuts over my parents to have one....i dont know much but the general age to get one is around 8th and 9th grade..

i just dont like kids that are 8 that have their own...its too much!
