Is australia a bear country?

i'm thinking of hiking, but i want to avoid going to bear countries, r there bears in australia?

only breed of bear we have is the drop bear, they live in trees and drop out of them and attack their pray, hence the name drop bear!

they can grow up to 2 1/2 meters tall and weigh up to 280kg.

i had a friend who was camping with his parents one weekend sadly he never came home, killed by a drop bear!

Koala's are not bears. We don't have any bears in Australia.

The only dangers you face hiking in Australia are

* snakes (if your wear protective clothes and leave them alone they will leave you alone - there are anti-venom for snakes so very unlikely to be deadly),

* leeches (little bugs that cling to your skin and suck you blood, actually supposed to be good for removing the toxins, slightly painful but can be removed with salt, no danger. Make sure you cover your ankles),

* ticks (again a bug like creature that sucks your blood, if you use tweezers flip the body upside down and pull it off your skin you'll be fine, if a little of the head is left behind it doesnt matter its completly safe. Wear cover-up clothing and the chance is unlikely),

* spiders (mostly harmless if you get one on you just flick it off. If you find you've had a bite seek medical treatment, they have anti-venom available. Not overly dangerous).

worry about getting lost or injured while hiking first that is your biggest danger

Definately no bears. The only potential hazard is snakes - wear sturdy shoes that cover your ankles if you are not sticking to a regular path.

No bears or big predators like mountain lions anywhere in Australia.

EDIT:

Sorry, forgot to mention the drop bears (thanks mmdjaajl and others). They're only dangerous to tourists so Aussies tend to forget about them. They don't bite - they just fall on top of you, so don't sit under trees.

Only Koala Bears, and they are'nt really bears, they are Marsupials.

Australia has no large predators that can kill you (like great cats, or bears).  We do however have plenty of deadly snakes (Taipan, Death Adder, Brown, Pythons), Spiders (funnel webbed, wolf, red back) and sea creatures (portuguese man 'o war, stonefish, blue ringed octopus)  to make you sweat when you are out and about.

we don't have the big bears you're probabaly thinking of, only koala bears... oh and the drop bears already mentioned  :D  Just watch out for the snakes, spiders and leaches.

(Welcome to Australia sense of humour. NO - we DO NOT have bears. If you think of Koala "bears" - they are NOT bears and you likely won't see much of them anyway. They are hard to spot and very rare in the wild.. Have a great trip)
