It is slightly preferable to gasoline because the CO2 emissions are lower.  I can do no better than to refer you to the Wikepedia article below.

The main health risk is the same as for gasoline - lack of exercise.

Even more important are the global warming and resource depletion implications.  So it is far better to walk and peddle more and to use and develop public transport.
