...just anxious for my one year old to walk on his own. He does really well w/ one finger of help and cruising, but can't seem to stand still on his own. You don't have to go into how all babies are different and he'll do it when he's ready...I'm really just curious about the balance question. Thanks!

  1. Balance comes with muscle control and coordination. You can help by letting him pretend to walk with his hands in yours or using a bouncer.

  2. I don't really have an answer for this question, but I share your plight.  My son is 13 months old, and it's obvious that he has the muscle strength to walk, but he just can't seem to get balanced.  Sometimes I think I'm hurting more than helping because when I hold his hands, he leans forward and can walk faster, but when he tries on his own, he falls over.  I think it's partly because he gets so excited too though.

  3. Practice makes perfect.  I don't think that there is anything specific that you should do to help your child walk other than practice with him.  Although, if you are really concerned, you could always see a physical therapist.  They have all sorts of exercises to help guide muscle control and development.  At 1 year though, I don't think that your son is behind at all.

Just think... the sooner he walks, the sooner he runs and the sooner you will have to run to chase him.  Enjoy each step as it is.

  4. I think balance is acheived by practice so as he starts walking with your help, he will gain the confidence and strength needed.  I don' t think anything other than your support will influence him.

BTW, in 6 months you'll look back and wonder what you did all day when he didn't walk because you'll be chasing him down all day!

  5. I think it is just practice and you help by holding fingers, placing objects away from reach, making it fun, hopping with baby infront of you, crawling, climbing, exploring and just relaxing because it will come along.
