Is bamboo harmful to pets?

I recently bought a few small stalks of bamboo (the kind you grow in water) at a Chinese shop to liven up my room, and I've been keeping my cats away from it and out of my room entirely just in case it is toxic.

Why don't you just buy some wheat grass from the Grocery Store and let her chew on that.  Ever since I have kept it in my home my cat has left the other plants alone, plus it is good for her. You know wheat grass is safe because people eat or drink it.
