Is bamboo really that "green"?

Question

I keep hearing about how much better it is for the environment than most other materials. However, I know to make it into fabric, all sorts of nasty chemicals are needed/produced. But i was wondering, if it grows so fast, isn't it leaching minerals and nutrients out of the earth at a much higher rate? I really don't know, so please help.

it is definitely better than hardwood for flooring and other such products. I am not sure about clothing, as I do not see whats wrong with cotton.

yeah those stupid plants are so bad for the earth, we should just burn them all.  So which came first the chicken or the egg.
