Is becoming a Notary Public profitable?

I need a side job for extra income while on materity leave any suggestions or would being a Notary Public for my neighborhood be worth the effort?

  1. It depends on where you live. In NY you can only charge  a small amount per noterization (avg charge is $2). The license is $60 for 4 years and then you have to buy a stamp or seal ($25.00 and up). Plus the banks noterize for for free usually if you are a customer. So in NY I would say totally not worth it, although it may give you an edge if you are applying for a job at a bank or court house.


  2. Depends on how many customers you get.   Fee is fixed by the State - so you might get $20 per notarization.

    It doesn't cost alot to become one - however, you do have to buy your seal - which may run $50 - $100.

  3. My sis is a notary. It's nice because you totally make your own hours, and it only take a couple minutes to perform your duties. It doesn't pay a whole lot, just dribbles and drabbles if you want to work from home. It really depends apon how much need there is in your neighborhood. My sister only sees between 2 and 5 customers a week, but for the few minutes it takes her, it's pretty easy money. She says she averages $40 per week.
