It depends what you mean by games designer. These days, it's very rare for a single person to design every aspect of a game.

You have the programmers and UI designers who decide how the user interface will work. You have the writers who deal with script, if applicable. You have the artists who design characters, locations, etc. You have the modellers who build them and ultimately determine what they look like. There will be directors who oversee all of these things, but as with any other kind of company, it takes time and hard work to get to be the one in charge.

It's not really difficult to get into any of these fields, as the video game industry is only getting bigger, but you will need to decide more specifically what it is you want to do.
