Is bedwetting past 5 abnormal, and if it is, what causes it?

I was a bedwetter until I was 14 (yeah, 14!) My parents were ignorant, thinking I was doing it on purpose. Thinking I would rather just lay and deliberately p**s all over myself, then sleep in it rather than go to the toilet...and as a results I was beat constantly for it, and well as humiliated by being made to wear a shirt that read "Hey boys and girls! I'm 9 years old and still not potty trained!" or made to sleep in the basement.

But now I'm really thinking...what really did cause me to not be able to feel my bladder while I was asleep? Especially at 14?!? Am I an exceptional case?

  1. I stopped wetting the bed at around the age of 8, but I have cousins from my dads side that are13-15 that wet the bed. It's okay if you still wet the bed past the age of 10. I don't know what caused it. Maybe you just didn't have an urge to wake up. You should be a role model for your kids and if they wet the bed past five you should not beat them!

  2. I myself was a bed wetter until I was 14.  I came from a family of bed wetters(my mom was 12 when stopped, my niece was 15, and my Grandmother was 13). When I was born the doctors told my mom my bladder was smaller than average, but the rest of my family was never diagnosed with any problems. I was very ashamed of the problem. I finally learned to train my muscles to hold in the urine. I also stopped drinking at least thirty minutes before bed. It was not something I could help and nor can most who have the problem. My dad's side of the family did not have this problem and they constantly made fun of me. those without the problem do not understand. they have full control of their bodies. I'm sorry for how your family treated you. I know it must have been hard.

  3. I was 12 when I stopped and mum took me to several doctors about it and they discovered that my bladder did not grow at the right rate (so it was smaller then it should have been) and to boot I was an extreamly heavy sleeper.  They put me on some pills that made me sleep lighter and I was fine.  i wouldnt be surprised if your parents were actually contributing to your bedwetting, causing you anxiety and making it go for longer because you would have been so upset and nervous every night when you went to bed.  You are not unusual and I have gone on to have children who were all not bedwetting at the age of three.  Honestly if I was you I would probably have stopped talking to my parents along time ago.

    I hope this helps.

  4. Bedwetting is part heredity, part bladder development, and can also come from stress overload in kids. My oldest son wet his bed until 14. He began after my wife left his abusive dad when he was 4 yrs old. The abuse your parents gave you over it only made it worse. Usually puberty cures this, but that depends on whats causing it. Some medical reasons can make this last into adulthood. You were not abnormal, your bladder's signals did not register in your brain correctly to wake you up. Then the bladder empties automatically when it's full, as you know. No child wets the bed on purpose, and your parents should be ashamed. You cannot change your parents, but when you have kids and one of them gets the "pee gene" like you did, you must promise not to repeat the abuse.

  5. It can be a ton of reasons.  From as simple as drinking too much before bed or not going before bed, getting too cold at night, or medical reasons such as kidney issues and diabetes. It can also be caused by emotional issues and if you were beaten for it, that can possibly cause it as well.

  6. I was a bedwetter untill about the same age... They found that the tube that ran from my kidneys downward was very small and therefore "The urge to pee" was hard to feel during the day and not bad enough to wake me up at night. I (24) to this day still have issues with it I just have to really pay close attention. :)
