Is beer classed as an alcoholic drink in Russia?

Mick Smith FP comes out with some stories. Today he reckons beer is not classed as an alcoholic drink in Russia. Is this true?

  1. Legally speaking yes, but we are talking about a country that drinks vodka like water so...to a Russian beer is no more alcoholic than water...


  2. I am from Russia, and you can believe me that in connection with the law beer is classified as "light-alcoholic" drink. There is no punishment for drinking beer on public and you can transfer 2 litres through customs (compare to one litre of vodka), but in all other aspects it is alcoholic.

  3. As far as I know the only place where beer is not classed as alcohol is in Bavaria, where there is a law going back hundreds of years classing it as foodstuff.

  5. Its a drink, contains alcohol, so yes, i very much doubt its classified as anything but a alcoholic drink

    i have no idea who Mick Smith is, but likely he said that because of the idea that Russians are so used to alcohol from all their potent drinks like vodka, that they don't in general consider beer a real drink.

  6. I cannot be too sure about russia, in most other parts of the world, most definitely yes.
