Question:

Is being Vegan a title, a lifestyle, or a test?

When do you achieve total Veganistic status? It has to be a title right? Because then anyone who just eats vegetables all day one day could consider him or herself a vegan, eat meat the next day and say they had a lapse. I'm trying to be vegan but a fruit fly flew in my mouth and I accidentally swallowed it without knowing, I just realized that the fly wasn't in my room anymore and did the math. So am I not a vegan now even though I haven't harmed or engaged in any animal mistreatment for the past month and two days?

  1. Interesting question.

I would say being a vegan is all three of a title, a lifestyle, and a test (under some circumstances). I'd say its also a continual commitment to compassionate living, without  changing back: so someone eating only veg one day, and meat the next is a meat eater, whatever other labels they might ascribe to themselves.

Any fruit flies accidently swallowed doesn't stop you being a vegan - this isn't about total perfection all the time, but it is about continually putting compassion towards people and animals first in the things you do.

  2. Give yourself a break

    S**t happens.

  3. Lifestyle.

Since you didn't eat meat on purpose, you keep your status as a Vagan.

  4. It was an accident.  You're fine:)

  5. Everything we incorporate in our lives are our LIFESTYLES. And veganism is a lifestyle. It is not something of a category or a title and definitely not a test.

In your case, its unintentional. It was an accident. So it doesnt make you not vegan.

  6. they are saying that humans eat about 15 spiders per year during sleeping.

I guess we'll never trully be 100% vegan.

  7. My definition of a vegan is a person who consciously refuses to consume animal products.

I've heard people say that veganism is a philosophy and a lifestyle, but I don't think that applies to everybody. I think there are different levels of veganism. There are people who are vegans based on their diet choices, but there are also people who are vegans because it is their lifestyle. They don't just give up animal products in food...they give up animal prodcuts all together like wearing leather. They believe in animal rights.

I wouldn't say you have lost your "title" as a vegan just because you accidentally swallowed a fruit fly. It's not a title that is strictly set in stone. Things happen. People realize that they may have eaten something that contained trace amounts of animal product even though they didn't know about it before. Today I ate a sweet potato role at a sushi place and then I learned there was mayonaise in it. That dosen't mean that I'm no longer vegan though. I will still refuse to eat animal products when I see them.

Veganism is whatever you want it to be depending on how passionately you feel about it. As long as you refuse to eat animal products and do not intentionally consume them, then you are vegan.

  8. Nope.  Bugs = not vegan.

Now, hand-in your vegan club member card.

    I'm kidding! :-P

  9. lol it's okay, it was an accident, and it's just a bug.

though aren't you worried about all the protein you're missing from not eating any meat?

  10. Veganism is a lifestyle.

  11. It's definately a lifestyle. But I think that you've contributed a lot to being a vegan, this shouldn't take away from that. It was the bugs fault, haha :-) Don't feel bad, it happens to soo many people
